Graduation Time is Here

Got some Pomp & Circumstance happening in your home?
Whether you'll be crying for joy at your child's
college commencement or kindergarten graduation,
here are a few great DIY ideas for handmade gifts.
Create a one-of-a-kind graduation wall canvas, celebrating the great achievement.  Using scrapbooking techniques, I kicked them up a notch, creating a 3-D canvas that is proudly displayed.  Pull together your favorite photo from the big day, the graduation announcement, and coordinated embellishments.  For all the details, click here.

Fun party favors for Grads
What better way to say "I'm so proud of you" than with a jar full of chocolate?  Here's a fun idea that would make great party favors or for your child to give to their friends.  Grab a bag of chocolate peanut butter cups, a small hinged or mason jar, a few graduation embellishments, and you'll have those kids eating out of your hands (literally).  For the complete tutorial, click here.

Photo Projects for Graduation
A simple wooden frame can easily be embellished into a special graduation keepsake.  One quick trip to your local craft room (or arts & crafts store, if you prefer) to pick up a few graduation-theme accents, and you'll be ready to create this wonderful treasure.  Click here for the tutorial.

Graduate Gifts
For a little something extra, why not alter a mini chunky notebook for the new grad?  It may be too small to keep track of all their job interviews, but it will work well for them to jot down their summer to-do list.   And it's the perfect size to hold a gift card! The link is here.
Hope these projects inspire you to create your own handmade treasured memories for your special graduate.  Now pass the tissues...

And don't forget Father's Day is this Sunday.
Here's another wall canvas project you
and the kids can create for Dad.

Keep Calm [and Ride On]

[This post originally appeared as a guest blog on Positively Splendid.]

Being a student in a small college town has its perks -- like riding your bike from your apartment to class, meeting friends downtown for coffee, and stopping at the library for a study session, and then cycling back home, all while exercising your brain and your body.

In June, our older daughter graduated from this bicycle-friendly academic world that she enthusiastically embraced for four years.   Is she ready to go out and make her mark on the world?  Well, ready or not, here she comes!  And in this day of high unemployment and economic despair, I am happy to report she just landed a professional job in her field of study.

As a mother, it is nerve-wracking exciting to cheer from the sidelines, as one's children take their first steps towards becoming self-sufficient in the "real" world. I know she'll be fine. I'm not so sure about me. Thank goodness I have my creative therapy. Thus, I present my altered art canvas entitled, "Keep Calm and Ride On."

This two-piece canvas uses the college graduation announcement and one of my favorite photos from that special day.  The photo captures her walking away, while taking a quick glance back.   I love how this represents her moving forward with her life, while always treasuring her wonderful college days.

The supplies:

12" x 12" and 12" x 4" artist canvasses
four eye screws
acrylic paint
cardstock - two solid colors and coordinating paper [I used the college colors]
chipboard letters
large and small Prima flowers
Buttons and hemp cord or embroidery floss
2011 tassel (found at Dollar Store)
decorative pearl brad
3 different coordinating ribbons, 16" in length
acrylic parentheses
bicycle stamp and black Staz-on ink
college announcement
photo

The process:

Paint both canvas pieces.  Let dry.

Cut solid color cardstock 1/2" smaller than larger canvas.  Cut coordinating papers to fit accordingly.

Decoupage cardstock and coordinating paper to canvasses.

Stamp [bicycle] image onto printed paper.  Trim and mat with solid paper, adhere to canvas.

Mat photo.  Position in place, but do not yet adhere.

Apply chipboard letters [I looped the tassel to one of the letters] and acrylic parentheses.

Using hot glue, adhere buttons to wheels on bicycle image.

Decoupage announcement and text onto canvas.  Hot glue layered flowers and small button, slightly overlapping onto announcement and text.

When dry, decoupage entire canvas which adds luster and holds chipboard letters in place.

Using 3D foam squares, adhere matted photo to canvas and hot glue pearl brad.

Measure and mark 3" in from sides on canvas edges [bottom edge for large canvas and top edge for smaller canvas].

Twist eye screws into canvas at marks, so canvasses line up.

Cut ribbon into 8" lengths. Tie three ribbons together, inserting ribbon through matching eye screws.
This connects the canvas pieces.  Trim ribbon ends at a diagonal.

The altered artwork canvas is now ready to display and can easily be mounted on the wall using one nail.

Now one question remains: Who gets to keep it? The proud Mom [me] or the new college graduate [her]?

Keep Calm and Ride On

OMG!  It must be my incredibly lucky day because today I'm featured on Positively Splendid.  Amy's wonderful blog is packed full of everything creative -- crafts, sewing, baking, painting, tutorials, decor and...well, everything!  I'm totally exhausted just thinking about all the inspiration that Amy shares.

So, grab a cup of coffee or tea (I'll have a large iced latte please) and join me over at one of my favorite blogs, Positively Splendid, to see my newest altered artwork, "Keep Calm and Ride On."  It's a two piece mixed media canvas, celebrating.  Celebrating what?  Hop on over and see for yourself.  Then I hope you will come back here and leave me a comment with what inspires your creativity.

See you over there!

Next Step: Real Life

I'm sure you have been on the edge of your chairs just waiting to see how
this little $1 spiral notebook was transformed.  Well, wait no more.
This 4-1/4" x 3-1/4" has been altered, despite its pocket-sized appearance.  Take a look:

Materials used include:
graduation-theme scrapbook paper
blue cardstock, stamped with graduation cap image
one small gold brad, yellow embroidery floss
square cutout chipboard
"Good Luck" & "Dream BIG" stickers
rosebud button, chipboard key
assorted ribbon, pink pearl bling
label maker, blue acrylic paint, Mod Podge

Put together with the photo frame and candy jar,
your graduate will cry tears of joy over all the work that went into this thoughtful gift ensemble.
Yeah, right.  Who are we kidding?
Well, at least they were fun to make.   Pass me the candy jar.

Hats off to You!

Graduation Gift
AP tests - check.
Prom - check.
Senior Awards Night - check.
GRADUATION!

As promised, here is my second project for graduation gifts.
What better way to say "I'm so proud of you" than with a jar full of chocolate?

Supplies needed:
1 bag* Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups
[*note:  If you can resist eating any of the candy yourself,
then you only need 1/3 of a bag.]
4-1/2" tall Glass Hinged Jar ($1 at Mike's)
Scrapbook Paper in school colors
In addition to blue cardstock,
I used graduation-themed paper from TC Studio's "Hats Off" Pad.
Coordinating Ribbon
Graduation Stamp Set
Gold Brad
Embroidery Floss
Square, Circle & Scalloped Punches
Small Charms

(I made two versions.  This one uses two coordinating papers.)
Wrap jar with  1-3/4" x 10" strip of paper.
Add narrow strip of contrasting paper, if desired.

Punch scallop circle and plain circle, stamp with "Hats off to You" image.
Place ribbon behind stamped image.  Adhere to jar.
Graduation Candy Jar
Punch out another scallop circle and adhere to top of jar.
Punch out square cardstock, attach floss with brad.
Adhere to peanut butter cup, and adhere to jar top.
Add coordinating ribbon and charms to hinge.
I used a star charm and a tiny metal "congrats" tag.

Here is the finished project:

These jars are so versatile, and can be embellished for any occasion.

While I whipped up this candy jar, I decided to quickly transform the graduation photo frame I posted a few days ago, giving it a feminine touch.

Either way, I hope your graduate will like it!

Pomp & Circumstance

Pomp & circumstance...and a cupful of [happy] tears!  Yes, it's graduation season.  Whether your child is graduating from kindergarten or college, it's an emotional time for us Moms.  Where did the years go?  Wasn't she just starting to crawl?  walk?  talk?  ride a bike?  sneak out of the house wearing make-up?  borrow the car keys?  go off to college?   Quick -- hand me the Valium!

Thanks.  I feel much better now.  Actually, the best Rx for times like this is
CREATIVE THERAPY!
Here is the first in a series of graduation projects I would like to share, beginning with a photo frame.
Here is the before-and-after picture.
I used a 10-1/2" x 4-1/2" MDF frame from Michael's.
It holds a 4" x 6 photo.

Assemble as many graduation-themed items from your stash,
or treat yourself to a quick trip to your local craft store.
Choose paint to match your school colors.

Remove the glass insert and set aside.  Paint the entire frame and let dry.
Stamp graduation sentiment onto glossy paper.  Adhere to frame.
[Hint:  I use Mod Podge to adhere most of the items to the frame.]
[Disregard streaky look in photo above.]

I am a sucker for my Label Buddy, so I typed out "Class of 2011."
Stickers and rub-ons will work too.
Adhere to bottom of frame.
Add dimensional quote.  I chose the definition of  "wisdom."
Add decorative embellishments.
[I used stickers, silver sparkles and grad cap and diploma buttons.]

Lastly, I inserted a 4" x 6" graduation-themed scrapbook paper
[which will be replaced with a real graduation photo].
Replace glass insert.
Voila!
Now pass the tissue box and save me a seat at the ceremony.
