Display Your Holiday Cards in Style

What do you get when you find a large, vintage picture frame, chicken wire and a set of alphabet stamps?  Answer:  A great way to display this year's holiday cards!

With so many people sending photo holiday cards,
how do you display them without their constantly falling down?
Here's a creative idea using just a few items
that are probably sitting in your garage just waiting for
some DIY inspiration.

All you need is a large picture frame, chicken wire, clothespins, and washi tape.  Paint the frame, attach the chicken wire (you can find a tutorial here), embellish mini clothespins with washi tape, stamp "Happy Holidays" on card stock, and easily create a beautiful display for all those photo cards you receive this year.

This is also a great way to display vintage holiday family photos.

You can also embellish the frame with holiday decor.  I added cinnamon sticks and twine to the top of my frame.  Then I stamped burlap card stock and hung "Happy Holidays" across the frame.

From my family to yours,
we wish you a very happy holiday season,
and look forward to great DIY inspiration in 2015!

Frequent readers of Altered Artworks
know that I love working with Terra cotta pots.
I've used them for
Here is one more project you can create using
three varying sized Terra cotta pots.
You'll also need yellow, orange & white acrylic paint,
decoupage sealer, foam brushes,
floral foam, E-6000 glue,
twine, Washi tape, ribbon,
and/or any other embellishments of your choice.

Oh, of course, you'll also need candy corn.
Since I only bought (notice I did not say "eat")
one bag of candy,
I filled the bottom pot with shredded crinkle paper.
And I planted a small cactus in the top pot.
Paint, decoupage and embellish the three pots,
following the traditional colors of candy corn.
Place some floral foam inside the largest pot
so it sits fairly snug.
Place the medium pot on top of the foam
so about 2/3 of this pot shows.
Repeat with another smaller piece of foam
in the second pot,
and place the smallest pot on top of it.
(This process is a lot easier to do than write!)
Use a bit of E-6000 to secure the pots in place.
Add the candy corn and shredded paper inside the pots,
filling up any empty spaces.
If you do not want the candy to be eaten,
cover it with decoupage so it cannot be removed.

Snail Mail Cafe - Postage Required

Stationery Organizer
You gotta love what technology has done for our day-to-day communication.  It's changed our lives so much.  We share new "Polaroids" [hello, Instagram], get immediate status of our BFFs and kids [how fast can you "tweet"?], view virtual bulletin boards of our favorite things [Pinterest], post photos and commentary ([Facebook], and of course, email--you can write me at dozeedo[at]gmail[dot]com.  And I didn't even mention blogging

However, I digress.  This post is really about my latest altered artwork project, the Mail Cafe

While recently thrifting at a local Salvation Army, I came across this beauty.  It looks like it was a wall organizer for a pad of paper and outgoing mail.  Yes, as in post mail, the kind that gets delivered right into your mailbox.  [The kind you need postage stamps for.]

My home can always use a little more organization, but this piece is a little too worn and dated for my liking.  I decided to spruce it up starting with a light sanding and a fresh coat of paint.

I purchased a Silhouette Cameo last year, which to be honest, is intimidating.  However, I finally decided to give it a test ride.  After a little a lot of practice, I cut out "Mail Cafe," and adhered it to the top of the wooden board.  Then I coated the entire board with Mod Podge in the satin finish.

With a bit of black & white dotted Washi tape, a few acrylic arrows, a fancy key, pretty glass knobs and red & white twine, I brought the organization board back to life.

Needing a place to quickly get my hands on stationery and postage items, I gathered kraft and white folded cards and envelopes, my mini address book, address labels, business cards, a roll of postage stamps, stapler, and a pen.

I adhered a stick-on pen holder onto the side of the board to hold the pen (embellished with Washi tape and twine) and added a snarky memo pad to the front.

And now all the items I need to mail you an actual letter are neatly organized and accessible.  Of course, it's not instantaneous like today's communication tools.  However, last time I checked, 45 46 cents can get a letter to you in just a few days.  Sometimes, good things come to those who wait!
